Description

[en] In September 1788, two officers in the Spanish Navy, Alejandro Malaspina and José Bustamante y Guerra, presented a plan for a scientific voyage around the world to the Naval Secretary, Antonio Valdés. Malaspina, orginally from Italy, imagined a voyage similar to that undertaken by three European explorers three years earlier: James Cook (1768-1777), Antoine de Bougainville (1766-1769) and Farnçois Galaup (1785-1788). The voyage took place during the reign of Charles IV, and the plans submitted to the king by the two Spanish officers proposed the execution of various hydrographic and astronomical works. They also envisaged gathering news about the state of the colonies, describing the social situation of the indigenous peoples and collecting data about their demographics, and reporting back on the turbulent political situation in the Spanish viceroyalties. Another of the stated aims was the study of the zoology and botany of each of the countries visited. The voyage was expected to last three and a half years. In collaboration with the publishers Doce, the CSIC has published for the first time a reproduction of the drawings made during this expedition by the draughtsman José del Pozo, Juan Ravenet, José Cardero, Tomás Suría, José Guió and Fernando Bambila, who were hired by the expedition to set down on paper the discoveries it made.
